A man with a history of sleepwalking in the United Kingdom strangled his wife because he was convinced that she was an intruder who had broken into their camper van, according to The Times online.

Brian Thomas, 59, and his wife Christine, 57, were on holiday in West Wales when he attacked her in the middle of the night.

Prosecutors accepted the findings of medical experts who said that he had a sleep disorder. They told Swansea Crown Court that they would not seek a conviction for murder or manslaughter.

The couple had been asleep in their van in a pub car park when they were disturbed by "boy racers" and decided to move. After they went back to bed Thomas had a nightmare in which the youths broke into their camper van.

He woke up alongside his wife's body and dialled 999. In a tape of the call played to the jury he was heard telling the emergency operator: "I think I've killed my wife. Oh my God. I thought someone had broken in. I was fighting with those boys but it was Christine. I must have been dreaming or something. What have I done? What have I done? Can you send someone?"

Thomas was crying and shaking when he was found by police officers 10 minutes after making the call. He had said of his wife: "She is my world."

이 사건과 관련해 검찰은 토마스가 수면 장애를 겪었다는 의료 전문가들의 판단을 받아들였다. 검찰은 스완시아 크라운 법정에서 그를 살인 혐의로 기소하지 않을 것이라고 밝혔다.

이들 부부는 공원 주차장의 밴에서 잠을 자고 있던 중 `폭주족'들이 소란을 일으키자 자리를 옮기기로 결정했다. 다시 잠자리에 든 뒤 토마스는 폭주족들이 밴에 침입하는 악몽을 꾸고 아내의 목을 졸랐다.

남편은 잠을 깬 뒤 아내의 시신을 발견하고 999에 전화를 걸었다. 그는 배심원을 대상으로 재생된 전화 녹음에서 긴급 교환에게 ``아내를 죽인 것 같다. 하느님 맙소사. 누군가가 침입한 걸로 생각했어. 젊은이들과 싸웠는데 아내였다. 꿈을 꾸고 있었음에 틀림없어. 무슨 짓을 저지른 거지? 누군가 보내줄 수 있나요?''라고 말한 것으로 전해졌다.

토마스는 전화를 건 10분 뒤 경찰에 발견됐을 때 울면서 몸을 떨고 있었다. 그는 아내에 대해 ``그녀는 내 모든 것''이었다고 흐느꼈다.
