South Korea Thursday presented U.S. President Barack Obama with a taekwondo outfit including an honorary black belt as a memento of his stay, Yonhap News Agency reported Thursday.

President Lee Myung-Bak personally chose the gift in recognition of Obama's past interest in the Korean martial art, a spokesman for Lee was quoted as saying.

"Because Obama learned taekwondo when he was senator, a taekwondo uniform, a black belt and an honorary certificate will be presented to him as presidential gifts," said spokesman Park Sun-kyo.

Taekwondo has different-colored belts to indicate skill levels, ranging from white for beginners to black for masters.

Seoul officials said Obama had reached an intermediate but not a master's level after years of practice.

Even though the first lady was not on the trip, her counterpart Kim Yoon-ok prepared a Korean recipe book in English as a gift to be delivered to her later.

Officials said a traditional Korean meal of bulgogi (marinated barbecued beef), japchae (noodles) and other dishes, along with Californian wine, would be served at lunch for the two leaders following their summit.

오바마에 태권도 장비

버락 오바마 미국 대통령이 방한 기념으로 명예 검은띠를 비롯한 태권도 장비를 선물로 받았다고 연합뉴스가 보도했다.

청와대 박선교 대변인은 이명박 대통령이 오바마 대통령의 태권도에 대한 과거의 관심을 감안해 이러한 선물을 선택했다고 발표했다.

박 대변인은 ``오바마 대통령이 상원의원 시절 태권도를 배웠기 때문에 태권도복, 검은띠, 명예 단증이 선물로 제공될 것''이라고 말했다.

한국의 고유 무술인 태권도는 기술 수준에 따라 다른 색깔의 띠를 착용하도록 돼 있어 초심자에게는 흰띠, 유단자에게는 검은띠가 지급된다.

한국 관계자들은 오바마 대통령이 수년간의 수련 끝에 유단자 수준은 안되고 중급에 도달했다고 밝혔다.

이대통령 부인 김윤옥 여사는 미셸 오바마 여사가 여행에 동반하지 않았지만 그녀에게 선물로 나중에 전달되도록 영어로 된 한국 요리책을 준비했다.

관계자들은 정상회담에 이은 두 지도자의 오찬에 한국의 전통음식인 불고기, 잡채 등과 캘리포니아 와인이 제공될 것이라고 밝혔다.

오바마 대통령은 수요일 아시아 순방의 일환으로 서울에 도착했는데, 두 지도자의 정상회담에서는 북핵 문제와 한미 자유무역협정이 논의된 것으로 알려졌다
